Lakers Fall to Wagner in Opening Round at ECAC Championships
March 1, 2008 Lewisburg, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's water polo suffered its first defeat of the season Saturday at the ECAC Championships, falling 17-8 to Wagner. The Lakers (1-1) fell behind 5-1 in the first period and could not recover despite scoring three in the second. Wagner recorded five in the second to build a 10-4 lead at the half and continued to build the advantage, outscoring the Lakers 7-4 in the third and fourth periods. Christine Somera led the Lakers with three goals, three assists, four steals and five drawn ejections. Freshman Rachel Griepsma and Jenn Jefferds added two goals, and Chrissy Becks chipped in one. Rhonda Marable recorded a team-high five steals. In goal, Gina Mieras totaled seven saves and contributed an assist. Mercyhurst returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m., against Slippery Rock. |
