Women's Water Polo Knocks Off George Washington at ECAC Championships

March 2, 2008

Stats

Lewisburg, Pa. - Behind a career-high six goals from freshman Rachel Griepsma, the Mercyhurst women's water polo team defeated George Washington 8-6 Sunday to earn fifth place at the ECAC Championships.

Along with her six goals, Griepsma added four drawn ejections and a steal. While Griepsma sparked the Laker offense, senior Gina Mieras fortified the defense, making 14 saves.

Mieras was key early as the Lakers limited George Washington to one goal in the first two periods and opened a 4-1 advantage. George Washington made a late charge with five second half goals, but Mercyhurst scored four to stay on top.

Chrissy Genian added a goal and an assist, and Christine Somera recorded one goal, one assist, two drawn ejections and three steals. Rhonda Marable and Christie Haibach each tallied one assist and three steals.

With three wins in their first four games, the 2008 Lakers are off to the best start since the program began in 2002.

Mercyhurst makes its home debut in North East, Pa., against Grove City on March 7. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
