Lakers Match School Mark with 17 Goals in Win Over Penn State Behrend

March 8, 2008

Stats

Erie, Pa. - Rachel Griepsma and Christine Somera each scored four goals and the Lakers tied a school record for goals in a game in a 17-3 victory at Penn State Behrend to open CWPA Western Division play Saturday afternoon.

The 17 goals scored matched the previous mark which was set in a 17-6 win over Salem International on March 19, 2005. With the win, Mercyhurst continued to build on its best start in school history, improving to 4-1 overall.

The Lakers have managed the start without the services of senior Carrie Willison--the third-leading scorer in school history--for four of the five games.

Griepsma, a freshman, has picked up the offensive slack. Including four goals on Saturday, she has tallied a team-leading 18 on the season, including 10 in the last two games. She also added one assist, a steal and one drawn ejection Saturday.

The Lakers jumped on Penn State Behrend early and never let up, building a 7-2 lead at the half. Goalie Gina Mieras blanked Penn State Behrend in the third and exited the game with an 11-2 lead, eight saves and one assist. Cathi Korenich entered in the final period and made three stops. The Lakers provided plenty of support, scoring six more for good measure in the fourth.

Along with Griepsma, Somera also totaled four goals and added two assists, two steals and two drawn ejections. Jacqueline Phillips matched a career high with three goals. Chrissy Genian added two goals and a career-high five assists.

Rhonda Marable posted two goals, three assists, three steals and a drawn ejection. Kallen Dearnbarger scored her first goal of the season and Jenna Jefferds totaled one, as well.

Mercyhurst hosts Washington & Jefferson Saturday evening and Michigan Sunday at 10 a.m.
