Women's Water Polo Pounds Washington & Jefferson, 15-4
March 8, 2008 North East, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's water polo team started Saturday with a record-tying 17 goals against Penn State Behrend and finished it with a 15-4 romp over Washington & Jefferson. With the win, the Lakers extend their winning streak to four games and improve upon their program-best start with five wins in their first six games. It also moved the Lakers to 2-0 in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division action. The Lakers managed to build a 2-1 lead after the first period, but the offense found its rhythm in the second, scoring six goals to take an 8-2 lead into the half. The Lakers added four more in the fourth and outscored the Presidents 3-0 in the final frame to seal the victory. Christine Somera led the Lakers with a season-high five goals and five steals. She scored four against Penn State Behrend earlier Saturday. Freshman Rachel Griepsma totaled four goals for the second-straight game. She also totaled two assists, two steals and four drawn ejections. Mercyhurst started the game with Gina Mieras in goal, and she went three quarters, allowing four goals and recording eight saves and two assists. Cathi Korenich entered in the final period and made four saves and an assist. Chrissy Genian matched a career-high with three goals and a tallied four assists. Jacqueline Phillips scored two and tallied two steals. Jenna Jefferds added one goal. Mercyhurst hosts No. 12 Michigan Sunday in North East, Pa. Game time is scheduled for 9 a.m. |
