Lakers Fall to Michigan's Second Half Rally
March 9, 2008
North East, Pa. - The Mercyhurst women's water polo team trailed No. 12 Michigan 5-4 at the half, but the Wolverines pulled away with a strong third quarter, sending the Lakers to a 15-6 defeat and snapping their four-game winning streak Sunday afternoon in North East, Pa. Michigan jumped on top 4-1 in the first, but Mercyhurst quickly closed the gap, outscoring the Wolverines 3-1 in the second period. Michigan's depth, however, proved too much as they outscored Mercyhurst 9-1 in the third to open an advantage that was too much for the Lakers to overcome. It was Mercyhurst's first loss in four games and also its first Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division defeat of the season. The Lakers are now 5-2 overall with a 1-1 conference mark. O Saturday, the Lakers scored 32 goals in just two games, but on Sunday, the Wolverines held them to their lowest point total of the season. Junior Chrissy Genian led the Laker attack with three goals and two steals. Senior Christine Somera added two goals, one assists, two steals and three drawn ejections. Leading scorer, freshman Rachel Griepsma, managed one goal, one steal and four drawn ejections. Senior goalie Gina Meiras totaled 15 saves and two steals, as well. Mercyhurst travels to the University of Michigan Invitational for three games beginning March 14 against Cal Lutheran, which is ranked fifth in Division III. |
