Women's Water Polo Climbs to Eighth in CWPA Top 10

Erie, Pa. - With two victories at the University of Michigan Invitational last weekend, the Mercyhurst women's water polo team improved to 7-3 on the season and vaulted one spot to No. 8 in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Poll. By receiving 65 points, the Lakers jumped over Harvard for eighth. It is the highest ranking in the program's history, and Mercyhurst is the lone Division II squad in the rankings. Of Mercyhurst's three losses, two have come against Michigan, which is ranked first in the CWPA. With seven wins in its first 10 games, Mercyhurst is off to the best start in school history, besting the 6-4 start of 2004. The Lakers have outscored their opponents 102-84 and are led by freshman Rachel Griepsma with 34 goals and senior Christine Somera with 28 goals and 14 assists. Mercyhurst puts its ranking on the line this weekend with three contests at Villanova in Philadelphia, Pa. The Lakers first face Iona Friday at 4:45 p.m. |
