Women's Water Polo Finishes Season at Eastern Championships
April 27, 2008 Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Mercyhurst women's water polo team's historic 2008 campaign came to a close Sunday afternoon with a 15-3 loss to Indiana in the seventh-place game at the Eastern Championship. The Lakers finished the season with a 14-9 record, coming just one win shy of tying the school record for wins in a season. And despite dropping all three games at the championship, the Lakers were the first Division II program to earn a berth into the field since 2004. The 18th-ranked Hoosiers jumped to an early lead Saturday--scoring six in the first quarter and four in the second--and held on for their third win over the Lakers this season. Mercyhurst received one goal and an assist each from senior Carrie Willison and Rachel Griepsma. Senior Christine Somera also added one goal and a team-high four steals. In goal, senior Gina Mieras tallied 11 saves, one assist and a steal. Griepsma closes her outstanding freshman season with a first-year player record of 80 goals. Somera and Willison finish their careers at Mercyhurst ranked second and third on the all-time scoring list. Mieras also stands as the program's all-time leader in saves. Also closing their careers Saturday were Rhonda Marable, Christie Haibach and Renee Sander. The senior class posted a record of 52-39-1 during their careers and graduate as the winningest four-year class in program history. |
