Metro State Able to Win Close Games on the Road

March 3, 2008

Final Stats

Metro State split wins against Western New Mexico Saturday at Mustang Stadium. Game two of the doubleheader had to be decided in extra innings with the Roadrunners winning 8-7. Pitcher Casey Thompson was called upon in the fourth inning with the score tied at six runs apiece. Thompson pitched five innings, giving up just one hit and allowing zero earned runs.

Designated Hitter Ashley Johnson had a quiet day, going 0-2 with two walks, but came through when it counted most by hitting a sacrifice fly and scoring Sarah Rusch in extra innings to beat the Mustangs.

Sunday's doubleheader started where Saturday left off with an extra innings game. Metro State never led in game one, and needed a two-run seventh inning just to tie the game at five. The Roadrunners exploded in extra innings with four runs and ended up winning game one 9-6.

Game two on Sunday was a much different story with Metro State winning 14-7. Leading the way was freshman first baseman Kailee Vessey. Vessey went four for five with five RBIs. Also contributing to Metro State's big day was left fielder Cari Thompson who went four for five, scoring three times.

With the series win Metro State improves to 7-6 overall, 3-1 in the RMAC. Western New Mexico falls to 5-10 overall, 1-3 in the RMAC.
