March 29, 2008
The Metro State softball team dropped two games to Colorado School of Mines, Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Metro had control of the first game of the series, but four errors cost the 'Runners the game. The 'Runners came out strong in the first inning, putting three early runs on the board. A pair of walks set the stage for Cari Thompson who blasted a three-run home run over the center field fence to give the Roadrunners the lead. The Orediggers struck back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Sarah Rusch added a solo shot in the top of the third to give MSCD the 4-3 lead. Thompson added another home run to give the 'Runners a 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs in the inning, the errors began to cost Metro, allowing four unearned runs to cross the plate and putting the final score at 7-5. Strong pitching was the story of the beginning of the second game. The 'Runners scored one run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Jessica Haab. Pitcher Libby Balogh held the Orediggers scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Mines managed four hits and four runs. CSM added two more runs in the sixth inning to push the final score to 6-1. Metro State fell to 17-14 overall and 13-9 in the RMAC.
