'Runners Win Series from UCCS

April 6, 2008

The Metro State softball team completed a four-game sweep of CU-Colorado Springs, Sunday afternoon at Auraria Field. The Roadrunners won by the scores of 8-5 and 1-0.

The Roadrunners' offense again started hot, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Sarah Rusch got things started with an infield single in the bottom of the first. Janessa Tesone followed with a home run over the left field fence to give MSCD the early 2-0 lead. The Mountain Lions responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the second, Metro would load the bases with three consecutive walks for Ashley Johnson who would come through with a double to left field to score three runs. Nicole Lyles followed with a single to score Johnson and give Metro the 6-2 lead. That would be all the offense the 'Runners pitching staff would need. Libby Balough pitched four innings to earn the victory and Jessica Fisher got the save going three scoreless innings and allowing just three hits.

The finale was a pitching duel between Metro State's Casey Thompson and UCCS' Stacy Ortiz. Both pitchers were dominating in the circle, allowing a total of seven hits between them. The 'Runners lone run came in the fifth inning. Danni Hedstrom led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Caitlin Jenks would bring her home on a RBI to second base. Thompson (7-2) pitched the complete game allowing just three hits and striking out five.

The Roadrunners improved to 21-14 overall and 17-9 in the RMAC and currently lead the Colorado School of Mines (13-9) in the East Dvision. They return to action next Saturday when they travel to Fort Lewis College.
