Softball Sweeps Openng Day Series with Nebraska-Kearney

The Metro State Softball Team won a pair of games from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. MSCD took the first game with a 11-3 five inning victory and then escaped with a 3-2 win in the final game of the day.

Game one was an offensive explosion for the Roadrunners, as they battered Lopers' starter Amanda Bell for seven runs in her four innings of work. Nicole Lyles led the charge with four RBI's including a two-run home run. Sarah Rusch and Jennessa Tesone both added two hits for the Roadrunners. Freshman Libby Balogh (8-7) earned the complete game victory allowing six hits and striking out six.

The Roadrunners rallied to take the second game, after being down 0-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lyles started the sixth off with a double to left field and advaned to third when Danni Hedstrom reached on an error. Molly Clark scored Lyles on a ground out to the pithcer for the first out of the inning. Cari Thompson singled to center field to score Hedstrom and even the score at 2-2.

The score would remain tied with the 'Runners batting in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tesone reached first on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a single by Ashley Johnson. Lyles had a sacrifice fly to centerfield to advance the runners. Hedstrom singled to left field and bring the winning run across for Metro State.

MSCD moves to 25-16 overall and 21-11 in the RMAC. The two teams will face off in another doubleheader, Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
