KENT, Ohio--Miami University's men's basketball team battled the league-leading Kent State University Golden Flashes but came up short as the RedHawks suffered a hard-fought 50-39 loss at Kent State on Tuesday evening.
Miami dropped to 14-14 overall and 8-7 in Mid-American Conference action, while the Golden Flashes improved to 24-6 overall and 12-3 in league play.
Miami used an 8-0 run early in the first half to capture a five-point lead at the 13:02 mark, 10-5. Junior forward Michael Bramos scored four points, while junior center Tyler Dierkers and junior guard Eric Pollitz each chipped in two.
A Tim Pollitz layup with 11:47 to play in the first half put Miami up 12-7, but Kent State went on a flurry to capture a one-point edge at 9:30, 13-12. Bramos knocked down a jumper with 6:40 remaining in the half to put the RedHawks back on top, 14-13. The Golden Flashes put together a 7-0 run to go up 20-14 and never trailed again.
Miami trailed five at the half, 23-18, and was able to close within two points of the Golden Flashes at the 15:06 mark off a Tim Pollitz three-point play, but Kent State was able to extend its lead to double figures, taking a game-high lead with 12 seconds remaining off an Al Fisher layup, 50-37. Junior guard Carl Richburg tossed in a layup with six seconds remaining to make the final margin 11 points, 50-39.
Tim Pollitz paced Miami with 13 points.
Mike Scott had 12 points and 10 rebounds for KSU, while Chris Singletary led all players with 15 points.
Miami concludes the regular season hosting Bowling Green at noon on Sunday, March 9. The RedHawks will honor their lone senior, Tim Pollitz, prior to the game.
