OXFORD, Ohio (AP) -Defensive end Craig Mester recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter and ran 7 yards for a touchdown to give Miami of Ohio a 7-0 win over Akron on Wednesday night. With under 10 minutes to play, RedHawks' linebacker Clayton Mullins sacked Akron quarterback Carlton Jackson, whose fumble led to the only score and gave Miami a win in a game marred by nine turnovers. Daniel Raudabaugh completed 16 of 31 passes for 189 yards for Miami (6-5, 5-1 Mid-American Conference). He also threw three interceptions. Cory Jones rushed 18 times for 66 yards for the RedHawks. Akron (4-7, 3-4) had only 216 yards in total offense. Running back Alex Allen gained 73 yards on 13 carries, and Chris Jacquemain completed 12 of 33 passes and had two interceptions for the Zips.
Miami vs. Akron Post-Game Notes - Nov. 14, 2007 Miami's last shutout was on Aug. 28, 2004 against Indiana State, 49-0. Both the first half and third quarter ended in a scoreless tie. That had not happened in a Miami game since last season when MU and Northwestern ended halftime at 0-0. The RedHawks have been held without any first-half points only one other time this season; Colorado led Miami 28-0 at halftime on Sept. 22 en route to a 42-0 victory. Conversely, Miami's defense has held only one other opponent scoreless in the first half; the RedHawks led Syracuse, 14-0, and eventually won by a score of 17-14. Akron and Western Michigan played to a 0-0 halftime tie in the 2006 regular-season finale. Jeff Thompson's interception at 12:04 of the fourth quarter and Jerrid Gaines' interception as time expired were the fourth and fifth passes of the game that were intercepted in the north end zone. Akron's interceptors included John Mackey, who had two, and Reggie Corner. Craig Mester's touchdown versus Akron in the fourth quarter was Miami's first defensive TD since 2005. It was a five-yard fumble recovery for Mester with Clayton Mullins causing the fumble. The RedHawks' Darrell Hunter scored a touchdown on a 27-yard fumble return versus Buffalo on Nov. 5, 2005. Miami's defensive unit held Akron to just 216 yards on 70 plays. Its previous best effort came against Bowling Green on Oct. 13 when the RedHawks held to Falcons to only 232 yards on 58 plays. Freshman Chris Givens had five receptions for 78 yards vs. Akron. His previous career best was five catches for 112 yards at Minnesota. Jake Richardson entered the Akron game as the nation's seventh-ranked punter (45.60 yards per punt). He punted five times against the Zips (52, 42, 48, 33, 31). Jabari Arthur's reception at 10:23 of the first quarter set an Akron single-season record for an individual. It was Arthur's 76th catch of the year, breaking the previous mark held by Domenik Hixon (75 catches during the 2005 season). Through 11 games, he has (entered game with 72), 78 catches for (987) 1,060 yards. Akron's Reggie Corner intercepted his sixth pass of the season at 11:57 of the third quarter. It was the 14th interception of his career.
