OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University freshman golfer Nathan Sutherland has advanced to the sectional qualifying round of the U.S. Open after shooting a four-under par 68 at the local qualifying tournament at the Toms Run Golf Club in Blairsville, Pa. on May 14.

Sutherland will next compete in Columbus, Ohio on June 2 with an invitation to the 108th U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego, Calif. on the line. He captured one of two available spots in the Blairsville local qualifier.

"Nathan had a very solid freshman year and it is great to see him continue his good play as his summer schedule begins. Playing in the U.S. Open sectional qualifier will be a great experience for him," said Head Coach John Wiler.

Sutherland shot an eagle on the par-5 18th hole to secure his spot in Columbus.
