Ricard Sets Record in Final Day of MAC/Sun Belt Championships
March 2, 2008 NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Paul Ricard set a MAC/Sun Belt Conference record and earned an NCAA `B' cut time of 15:21.17 in the 1,650 freestyle, but that was Miami's lone top-three finish of the day as Miami finished the MAC/Sun Belt Championships with an sixth place overall finish. Ricard broke the previous 1,650 freestyle record set in 2005 by Western Kentucky's Karl Swanson by more than six seconds en route to Miami's top-finish of the day. Ricard finished two seconds ahead of Western Kentucky's Sean Penhale, while the next closest time was 22 seconds behind Ricard's record time. The RedHawks were unable to score any points in the 200 backstroke, but senior Ryan McHugh and sophomore Dave Brown both qualified for the `A' final in the 100 freestyle and they earned fifth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively. McHugh touched the wall in a time of 45.18, while Brown clocked in with a time of 45.58. Sophomore Michael Carroll finished in a tie for 15th place in the 200 breaststroke, recording a time of 2:07.67, before freshman Jason Hass and junior Nick DuPuis added 12th- and 14th-place finishes, respectively, in the 200 butterfly. The RedHawks rounded out the championships with a sixth-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay. Missouri State edged Denver by 34 points to earn first-place honors, while Eastern Michigan, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois rounded out the top five. Miami finished in sixth place with 315.5 points.
