OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami women's swimming and diving team positioned itself to extend its overall lead at the 17th annual Miami Invitational Saturday morning by qualifying in the top spot in four of the session's six events. The RedHawks lead the eight-team field with a score of 1398.5. Emory is in second with 939 points.

Sophomore Leah Thornton, who won two events Friday night, qualified first in the 200-yard backstroke with a new career-best time of 2:00.32 and second in the 100-yard butterfly with another personal-best time of 55.57. Her classmate, Bekka Westrick qualified first in the 100 fly with a 54.79, a personal-best. The 100 fly will be filled with RedHawks as seven Miami swimmers qualified in the top heat of nine spots.

Senior Megan Brunn took the top spot in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.56) and 200-yard IM (2:04.61) with season-best swims. Just behind her in second place in both events was fellow senior Kelsey Vehr, who won two events on Friday night.

The RedHawks will try to hang on for the team championship in tonight's finals at 6 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
