Miami Concludes Play at Flyer Classic with Loss to 20th Ranked Purdue

DAYTON, Ohio – Miami dropped its final game of the Dayton Flyer Classic Saturday 0-3 to 20th-ranked Purdue. At the conclusion of the tournament, Emily Schroeder was named to the All-Tournament team. The RedHawks fall to 6-6 on the season, while the Boilermakers improve to 11-1.
After falling behind 0-5 in set one, Miami rallied with three consecutive points, scored on two kills from Catherine Wolfe and one from Maria Leahy. Purdue increased its lead with a 7-2 run that made the score 12-5. Another kill by Wolfe, as well as kills from Leahy and Michelle Mangia pulled the RedHawks to within 11-17, but it was the closest they would get as the Boilermakers won the set 25-16.
Miami started off set two with a block that forced Purdue into an attack error. The two teams played evenly throughout the early part of the set, with Megan Griffin scoring three kills. Leading 8-7, Purdue went on a 12-5 run to open up a 20-12 lead. With the score 14-24, the RedHawks were able to fight off one match point thanks to a kill from Amy Raseman, but the Boilermakers scored a kill of their own on the next point to take the set 25-15.
Two attack errors by Purdue gave Miami a quick 2-0 lead in set three. With Purdue leading 7-5, Amy Raseman scored a kill off the Boilermaker’s serve. Wolfe and Raseman then took over serving as the RedHawks went on a 7-1 run that gave them a 12-8 lead. That run featured both of them recording service aces. Purdue went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead, but followed it with a service error to retie the score at 13. Leahy scored a kill off an assist from Jenn Caylor to give Miami its final lead of the set at 14-13. Purdue went on a 12-1 run to close out the set and match 25-15.
For the match, Leahy led the way with six kills. Mangia had 12 assists, and Melissa Zenz led the team with 15 digs.
Miami begins MAC play next Thursday when they host Bowling Green at 7 p.m. The game is Family Night, and will feature a meet the team event in the north concourse of Millett Hall at the conclusion of the match.
