|
May 12, 2008
Mizzou sophomore Kyle Gibson has been named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Gibson recorded a win and a save in the Tigers' three-game series at Kansas last weekend to earn his first career weekly conference honor. In Friday's series opener with Kansas, Gibson came on in relief in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and two outs and struck out the first batter he faced to record his first save of the year and the eighth of his career. On Sunday, Gibson picked up his second complete-game victory of the season as Missouri run-ruled Kansas, 12-1 in seven innings. He was perfect through the first 3.2 innings and struck out eight, allowing just one run on five hits in the game to improve to 8-1 on the year. His eight victories are tied for third most in the Big 12 and he is third in the conference with 83 strikeouts. Gibson's ERA of 3.59 is 12th best in the league. This marks the fourth time a Tiger has earned a weekly Big 12 honor this season. Junior Aaron Crow has been named twice been named Pitcher of the Week (March 24 and April 7) and senior Jacob Priday took Player of the Week honors on April 14). The four awards are tied for the most in the conference this year. Missouri will conclude the regular season this weekend with a three-game series against Nebraska at Taylor Stadium. Game one is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
