MIT Falls to Springfield, 316.20-306.70
Feb. 10, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT's men's gymnastics team opened its 2008 dual meet schedule on Saturday afternoon when it hosted Springfield College, and despite senior Joshua Coblenz winning the all-around competition with a score of 78.65, the Engineers fell to the Pride, 316.20-306.70. The Cardinal and Gray dropped to 0-1 with the loss, while Springfield improved to 1-1 while picking up its first win of the season. Coblenz was impressive in earning his individual triumph, defeating runner-up Josh Fox of Springfield (77.55) but 1.10 points. The native of Springfield, Va., won the parallel bars with a score of 13.90 and placed third overall on both the still rings (13.00) and the pommel horse (11.90). Junior Boris Rasin provided Tech's highest score in two events, earning a 13.85 on the floor exercise and a 12.90 on the horizontal bar to pace the Engineers. The Brookline, Mass., native's score on the horizontal bar was good enough for a tie for second-place. Rookie Jake Shapiro was most impressive for MIT on vault, placing fifth with a mark of 14.35, while he also tied Coblenz for third on the pommel horse (11.90). Tech's best overall event was the pommel horse, as Coblenz, Shapiro, Jesse Ashcraft-Johnson and Rasin finished third through sixth, respectively. The Engineers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on Temple University at 7:30 p.m. |
