Vermont Slips Past MIT, 3-2

Jan. 28, 2008

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore forward Mike Ursiny assisted on all three of the University of Vermont's goals, as the host Catamounts overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat MIT, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in NorthEast Collegiate Hockey Association (NECHA) Conference A East Division action at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The loss was just the Engineers' (9-2-0, 6-2 NECHA) second of the season, but both setbacks have come at the hands of division-rival Vermont (9-8-2, 5-3 NECHA).

Forward Ryan Ballentine scored both of MIT's goals, bumping his season total up to eight to go along with a team-leading 17 assists for 25 points. With that tally, the junior leapfrogged line-mate Nick LaBounty (14 goals, 10 assists for 24 points) into the top spot on Tech's scoring charts.

The Engineers out-shot the Catamounts, 14-5, in the opening period and used that advantage to open up a 2-0 lead. Mike Kozlowski and Kevin Farino provided the assists for Ballentine's first goal, which came on the power-play with 10:21 remaining in the first frame, while defenseman Eddie Sturm fed Ballentine for his second at 3:18.

However, MIT's dominance did not carry over into the second period, as the hosts erased their heavy shot deficit by out-shooting the Engineers, 19-10, the rest of the way. Charlie Hagen got Vermont on the board less than two minutes into the middle stanza, courtesy of helpers from Mike Andrusko and Ursiny. The Catamounts then knotted the score at 2-2 at 9:24 of the same period, as Dan Halpin (from Adam Roof and Ursiny) took advantage of an MIT penalty to score on the power-play.

Ursiny finished off his trio of assists by feeding John Amory for the game-winner just one minute into the third period.

Vermont goaltender Chris Carlaccini was forced to make just two saves in the final 20 minutes to secure the victory. The sophomore stopped 22 shots altogether, while MIT net-minder Thomas Hopkins made 21 saves in the losing effort.

The Engineers will return to Johnson Ice Rink for the first of three consecutive home games on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they will host WPI at 7:00 p.m. Vermont's next contest will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2, as it will travel to Sienna College for an 8:15 p.m. faceoff.
