Women's Ice Hockey Falters During Weekend Road Trip

Jan. 28, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In its first back-to-back road games since opening weekend, the MIT women's ice hockey team fell to UMass Boston, 4-1, and Saint Anselm College, 9-0. With the losses, the Engineers' ledger moved to 0-11-1 overall and 0-10-1 in ECAC East play.

In Friday's match-up at UMass Boston, Maria Nasta collaborated with Katherine Wall to find Hannah Davis on the power-play to put the Beacons on the board at 14:42 of the opening period. Nasta then teamed with Rachel Sousa to set up Lauren Duran for what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 9:42 mark of the second stanza. UMass Boston extended its lead 22 seconds later when Teresa Horn fed Katelyn Lajoie for a shot that squirted through the right side of the net.

MIT prevented the shutout when Rachel Longley converted a pass from Catherine Harding after 6:53 elapsed in the final frame. Sousa capped the scoring for the hosts after connecting on passes from Wall and Nasta for another power-play strike. In net, Rachel Bowens-Rubin collected 41 saves for the Engineers while Jessica Sams stopped eight shots for the Beacons.

The next day, Saint Anselm posted five goals in the first period, followed by two apiece in the remaining periods to cruise to victory. Maria Prus made 27 saves for the Engineers while Carley Berry stopped all nine shots she faced for the Hawks.
