Late Goals Lift Saint Michael's Past MIT, 3-1
Feb. 1, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A pair of goals by Gabrielle Bourgeois during the last 10 minutes of regulation helped lead Saint Michael's College to a 3-1 victory over MIT in an ECAC East women's ice hockey game on Friday night. With the win, the Purple Knights improved to 5-10-1 on the year and 5-6-1 in conference play while the Engineers' ledger moved to 0-12-1 overall and 0-11-1 in the ECAC East. Saint Michael's wasted little time getting on the board as it took the lead after 1:23 elapsed. Amy Schoon found Kelly Rose Losi on the left side of the net whose shot hit the inside of the right post and slowly slid in for the score. The slight edge would hold for the remainder of the period and into the second stanza until MIT tallied the equalizer at the 10:14 mark. After corralling a rebound on the left side of the net, Rachel Longley sent a blast into the top right corner as Stephanie Brenman and Catherine Harding earned the assists. Another defensive battle ensued with the game entering the second intermission at a deadlock. In the final frame, the Purple Knights successfully killed a pair of penalties before registering its own power-play goal at 9:19. During a scramble in front of the goal, Meghan Sweezey and Desiree Biron found Bourgeois for what proved to be the game-winning goal. The Engineers were awarded two more power-plays, but it was Saint Michael's that found the back of the net with 43 seconds remaining. Bourgeois picked up a loose puck at center ice and sent a blast for a short-handed empty net insurance goal. In net, Rachel Bowens-Rubin collected 31 saves while Melanie Cullen turned away 27 shots. Both teams will continue ECAC East play on Saturday, Feb. 2. MIT will host Norwich University while Saint Michael's will travel to Salve Regina University. |
