EAST LANSING, Mich. - After 36 holes at the 2008 Big Ten Women's Golf Championship, the Michigan State women's golf team stands in second place with a first-day 19-over par 595 (292-303). Friday action was completed at the Penn State Blue Course in University Park, Pa., with Purdue leading the action at 10-over par 586 (298-288).

Freshman Aimee Neff leads the way for the Spartans with a four-over par 148 (73-75) to sit in a tie for fourth. Neff was consistent over the two rounds, posting 29 pars over her 36 holes. Also, she played the par-fives at one-under.

Senior Jordyn Wells and sophomore Laura Kueny are among a group tied for 15th at seven-over par 151. Wells opened the day with an even-par 72, which included four birdies on the back nine, but followed with an seven-over 79 in the second round. Meanwhile, Kueny began slow with a six-over 78 on the first 18, but bounced back with a team-low one-over 73 in the second round. Kueny posted four birdies in her second round, including the 17th and 18th holes.

Senior Sara Brown tied for the low round of the day with an opening round two-under 70, but ended the day with a 10-over 82 in the afternoon. Brown had seven birdies on the day, including five in her first round.

Rounding out the Spartans at the Big Ten Championship was junior Holly Niederkohr, who finished in a tie for 34th with a 12-over par 156 (80-76), and freshman Michelle Bowles, who tallied a 14-over 158 (77-81) and is in a tie for 41st. Niederkohr posted five birdies on the day, while Bowles had three.

Following Purdue and Michigan State after Friday's two rounds are Ohio State (24-over 600), Wisconsin (30-over 606), Indiana (32-over 608), Michigan (36-over 612), Penn State (37-over 613), Northwestern (37-over 613), Iowa (40-over 616), Minnesota (42-over 618) and Illinois (53-over 629).

 

 

Purdue's Christel Boeljon is the lone individual under par for the day, leading the tournament at one-under par 143 (73-70) by three strokes.
