March 26, 2008
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball head coach Cathy George was recently selected as one of the two head coaches for the USA Volleyball A2 National Team. George and University of Texas head coach Jerritt Elliott will conduct training of 20 selected athletes, from the recent tryouts held at the Olympic Training Facility in Colorado Springs, Colo., in May in Atlanta, Ga. Upon completion of the training session, the 20 athletes will be split into two teams for competition in the USA Open National Championships, held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta on May 24-31. "I am honored to represent the United States at the U.S. Open National Volleyball Championships in May," said George. "It will be a great experience to work with athletes from many different universities as well as elite level coaches." This will be George's second experience working with USA Volleyball, having been an assistant coach for the United States team at the 1999 World University Games in Mallorca, Spain. George just completed her third season as head coach of the Spartans, leading them to the NCAA Regional Semifinals and a 21-14 record. One of the top-50 winningiest coaches in NCAA history, George has compiled a career record of 417-268 in 21 seasons of collegiate coaching, including 11 seasons at Western Michigan, five at Texas-Arlington and two at North Dakota State, prior to arriving in East Lansing. In her three seasons in green and white, she has a 52-44 record.
