UNLV Men and BYU Women Lead After Day Two of the Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships

UNLV women's 200 freestyle relay team breaks MWC all-time record

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -

The UNLV men's and BYU women's swimming and diving teams lead the rankings with 306 and 342 points, respectively, through day two of the 2008 MWC Swimming and Diving Championships. The Wyoming men and women are second in their respective competitions with 270 and 247.50 points, respectively.

The UNLV women's 200 freestyle relay team broke the all-time Conference record with their time of 1:31.83. The time was also an NCAA-B cut time.

BYU is third in the men's rankings with 226 points, followed by TCU (216), Air Force (191) and Utah (134). On the women's side, UNLV holds the third spot with 214 points, followed by Utah (210), Colorado State (155), New Mexico (112.50), TCU (108), San Diego State (81) and Air Force (67).

Day three events begin with the men's 400 individual medley prelims at 10 a.m. CST, with the finals starting at 6 p.m. CST. The MWC Swimming and Diving Championships conclude Saturday, March 1.

NOTES:

  • UNLV's Johan Claar won the 500 freestyle with a provisional qualifying time of 4:21.67. Rebel teammates John Mendoza (4:23.55, second place) and Kier Maitland (4:26.66, fourth), and BYU's Travis Price (4:23.99, third place) also swam NCAA-B cut times.
  • The women's 500 free saw three NCAA-B qualifying times. BYU's Natasha Menezes (4:51.52) defended her individual title in the event, while Wyoming's Aimee Stinson (4:52.82) and Stephanie Vint (4:53.91) finished second and third, respectively.
  • After finishing second in last year's 200 individual medley, UNLV's Devin Phillips brought home this year's title in 1:49.01, an NCAA-B cut time.
  • Four athletes recorded provisional qualifying times in the 200 individual medley, led by UNLV's Kim Bonney's winning time of 2:01.47. Bonney's time is the second fastest in MWC history. BYU's Leilani Roberts (2:03.05), Sara Jayne Christiansen (2:03.31) and Angela Price (2:03.44) also turned in NCAA-B cut times.
  • In the 50 freestyle, UNLV's Richard Hortness matched his prelim time of 19.73 in the finals for the win. His time is an NCAA-B cut. Rebel colleague Thomas Andolfsson also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with his second-place time of 20.16.
  • The top-six finishers in the women's 50 free all had NCAA-B cut times. UNLV's Megan Hunt-Higgins paced the field with a 22.86 clocking, while BYU's Aleesha Miller touched the wall in 22.95 for second place and UNLV's Marina Sandback claimed third in 23.10. Wyoming's Cassie Stelow (23.14), Utah's Natalie Edge (23.19) and BYU's Kirsty Ferrell (23.29) rounded out the top-six.
  • Wyoming placed three divers in the top-five of the one-meter springboard. Freshman Kyle Bogner won the event with a final score of 314.50, followed by junior Tyler Miller (third, 307.30) and freshman Mark Murdock (fifth, 292.85).
  • BYU's Tawni Jones won the women's three-meter springboard with a Conference season-best score of 323.65. She was followed by Wyoming senior Brittany Wainwright (295.80) in second and New Mexico senior Carrie Quinn (287.55) in third.
  • The UNLV men's 200 freestyle team reclaimed its dominance in the event, winning their eighth Conference crown in nine years in a NCAA-B cut time of 1:20.01. TCU and BYU also had NCAA-B cuts with times of 1:20.39 and 1:20.60, respectively.
  • The Rebel women's 200 free relay squad set a new MWC record with a time of 1:31.83, surpassing Utah's previous Conference-best time of 1:31.93, set at the 2005 championships. UNLV, BYU, Utah and Wyoming also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
