March 10, 2008 NEW ORLEANS - TCU head track and field coach Darryl Anderson and BYU men's coach Mark Robison have been named regional coaches of the year, while BYU's Kyle Perry and Wyoming's Jake Shanklin were named the Mountain Region Track and Field Athletes of the Year, respectively, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today. Anderson, in his fourth year with the Horned Frogs, was named the Women's South Central Region Coach of the Year. He recently led TCU to its first conference title since 2004 and first in the Mountain West Conference. Individually, Anderson was honored at the end of the conference championships as the MWC Women's Coach of the Year. Overall at the MWC Championships, the women's team won 12 different event titles, set three new school records and posted two NCAA automatic qualifying marks. BYU, under Robison's direction, won the Mountain West Conference men's title with 169 points, a performance that included four of the top six places in the pole vault. Robison, who was named the Mountain Region Coach of the Year, is in his fourth season as the men's track and field coach at BYU, where his father, Clarence, coached the Cougars for 40 years. The BYU men captured their sixth consecutive indoor conference title this season. Perry was honored as the Mountain Region Track Student-Athlete of the Year. He has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship meet in the mile (3:59.16) and 3,000 meters (7:51.20). His 3,000 clocking is a Mountain West Conference men's indoor record. Perry, a junior from Sandy, Utah, won the MWC title in the mile this year. Shanklin, who was named the Mountain Region Field Student-Athlete of the Year, won the 35-pound weight throw at the Mountain West Conference meet with a toss of 71-1¼. Earlier in the season, he reached 71-10¼, and he ranks third on the yearly list heading into the NCAA Indoor Championships. He placed 12th at last year's NCAA indoor meet. Shanklin is a junior from Ellensburg, Wash.
In each of the country's nine regions, the USTFCCCA selects the top men's and women's track athlete, field athlete, head coach and assistant coach for the 2008 NCAA Division I indoor season. |
