MWC Institutions Send 43 Individuals, Three Relay Teams to NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Mountain West Conference member institutions will send a combined 43 individuals and three relay teams to compete at the 87th Annual Men's and 27th Annual Women's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held June 11-14 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) will be airing live coverage of the Championships on June 13, from 7-10 p.m. CT, and on June 14, from 3-5 p.m. CT.

On the men's side, 20 individuals from five institutions will represent the MWC in 13 events. Leading the pack is BYU's Leif Arrhenius, who will compete in the discus throw. Arrhenius currently ranks first nationally in the event (207'-1.00" [63.12m]), according to TrackShark.com. New Mexico's Robert Caldwell (pole vault, 18'-1.00" [5.51m]) and TCU's Jonathan Jackson (triple jump, 54'-3.75" [16.55m]) also rank in the top-five in the nation at second and fourth in their respective events (TrackShark.com). After recently winning the discus title at the Midwest Regional, Colorado State's Jason Schutz will compete in both the discus and hammer throw events at the Championships. The Horned Frogs will additionally send two men's relay teams to compete in the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.

For the women, seven of nine institutions will send a total of 23 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships to compete in 15 individual events. San Diego State's Stephanie Bagan and BYU's Angela Wagner each earned automatic bids after winning titles in the women's pole vault and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, while competing at the West Regional. New Mexico's Katie Coronado (javelin) and TCU's Kishelle Paul (400-meter hurdles) also earned automatic bids, placing first at the Midwest Regional in their respective events. Horned Frog sprinter and 2008 MWC Women's Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year Virgil Hodge will head into competition this weekend sitting fourth nationally in the 200-meter dash (22.76), according to TrackShark.com. The UNLV 4x100-meter relay team will represent the lone MWC women's relay team at the Championships.
