NCAA Awards New Mexico's Jeremy Johnson with Postgraduate Scholarship Johnson one of 58 student-athletes in the country to receive the award
June 26, 2008 INDIANAPOLIS - Former New Mexico distance runner Jeremy Johnson has been awarded a postgraduate scholarship, the NCAA announced yesterday. Johnson becomes just the 19th student-athlete in Mountain West Conference history to receive the prestigious award. In the 2006-07 academic year, three MWC student-athletes earned NCAA postgraduate scholarships. The Albuquerque, N.M., product received third team Academic All-America honors last spring, is a four-time academic all-conference selection and two-time MWC Scholar-Athlete, and has been named to the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field all-conference teams eight times. Johnson recently earned All-America honors after placing seventh in the men's 10,000-meter run at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 29:06.13. He was also named the 2007 MWC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year and earned All-America accolades at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships, finishing 20th with a time of 30:18.20. The NCAA awarded 58 postgraduate scholarships of $7,500 each to 29 male student-athletes and 29 female student-athletes who participated in spring 2008 sports, which included men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, men's and women's outdoor track and field, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, baseball and softball. To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated. An equitable approach is employed in reviewing each applicant's nomination form to provide opportunity to all student-athlete nominees to receive the postgraduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program. |
