MWC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week

New Mexico's Dane Hamilton and BYU's Nelson Castleberry honored with first career weekly honors.

March 24, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior Dane Hamilton and BYU freshman right-hander Nelson Castleberry have been named Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is the first career weekly award for both recipients.

Hamilton, a Grand Junction, Colo., native, batted .526 (10-for-19) for the week, with two doubles, one RBI and eight runs scored in leading the Lobos to a 4-1 record on the week, including a series win over conference foe TCU. In a doubleheader sweep over in-state rival New Mexico State, he went 5-for-8 from the plate, while scoring eight of UNM's 20 runs and stealing a base. Hamilton went 1-for-4 in a game one loss to TCU (10-2), and followed with a 2-for-3, one-RBI performance in the Lobos' 7-4 game two win. In New Mexico's 5-3 series clinching win, he went 2-for-4 at the plate. Defensively, Hamilton had nine putouts and three assists from his outfield and third base positions, respectively.

Castleberry, from Spanish Fork, Utah, threw a complete nine-inning game in BYU's 7-1 victory over Kansas State last Tuesday. He allowed four hits and one earned run, while striking out nine and walking three. Castleberry recorded at least one strikeout in eight of his nine innings on the mound and set the Wildcats down in order in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. He also held Kansas State to a .129 batting average for the game, while leaving nine men on base.
