New Mexico's Cavazos-Galvez and San Diego State's Green Named MWC Baseball Co-Players of the Week; SDSU'S Strasburg Named Pitcher of the Week

March 31, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico junior Brian Cavazos-Galvez and San Diego State senior Garett Green have been named Mountain West Conference Co-Players Week, while Aztec right-hander Stephen Strasburg earned MWC Pitcher of the Week accolades.

Cavazos-Galvez, an Albuquerque, N.M., product, led the Lobos to a 5-1 non-conference record last week, going 15-for-26 from the plate (.577), with five doubles, eight RBI and 12 runs scored. He started the week going 4-for-8 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in UNM's two-game series split with New Mexico State. In the first game of a four-game tilt vs. Vermont, Cavazos-Galvez went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored in a 12-3 Lobo win. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader vs. the Catamounts, he went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, and followed with another 4-for-4 outing from the plate in game two, scoring three more runs as the Lobos won each contest by a 9-4 margin. In the final game of the series, Cavazos-Galvez went 1-for-5 with an RBI single and two runs scored in an 8-3 win.

Green, from Anaheim Hills, Calif., batted .500 (10-for-20) from the plate, with one home run, one double, five runs scored and four RBI, as the Aztecs went 5-0 in non-conference action last week, including a three-game sweep of Houston. In SDSU's 6-3 win over then-No. 23 UCLA, Green had an RBI single and hit his fourth homer of the season to give the Aztecs the lead for good in the seventh inning as part of a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Against Harvard, he went 2-for-4 while also scoring a run in a 4-0 Aztec win. In the series opener vs. the Cougars, Green went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. In game two, he singled in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, then scored the winning run in the 7-6 SDSU win. In the series finale, he went 2-for-4, including an RBI single that capped a four-run fifth inning, giving SDSU the lead for good in a 9-6 victory. Defensively, Green had 11 putouts, 10 assists and one error.

Strasburg, a San Diego, Calif., native, allowed just two hits, walking one batter and striking out 12 in his 8.0 innings on the mound to record a shutout victory in the first game of a three-game series vs. Houston. Strasburg held the Cougars, who entered the week receiving votes in the national polls, to a .080 team batting average (2-for-25) for the game. He retired 12 of the first 14 batters that came to the plate, and faced the minimum nine batters over his final three innings of work. After allowing the leadoff batter to reach base in the fifth and sixth innings, Strasburg pitched out of both jams to maintain the shutout. In his final inning on the mound, he struck out the side.
