TCU AND NEW MEXICO TAKE LEAD IN MWC STANDINGS
TCU (27-13, 11-4 MWC) and New Mexico (27-14, 11-4 MWC) moved into first-place in the Conference standings after sweeping BYU and Utah, respectively, in league play last week. San Diego State (23-17, 10-5 MWC) relinquished the top spot in the standings and now sits in third place after losing two of three games at UNLV (18-20, 7-8 MWC). The Rebels moved into fourth place in the rankings, while BYU (15-24, 5-7 MWC) dropped to fifth. Utah (13-20, 3-8 MWC) remains in sixth place, while Air Force (13-24, 0-11 MWC) is seventh.
THIS WEEK IN THE MWC
This week's schedule features 19 games and is highlighted by a battle for first-place between Conference co-leader TCU and second-place San Diego State. Saturday's contest between the Horned Frogs and Aztecs will be shown live on The Mtn. at 1 p.m. PT. Other league match-ups will see BYU at Air Force and UNLV at Utah. MWC co-leader New Mexico has a league game bye this week. This week's non-conference slate begins Tuesday with five league teams in action, including New Mexico beginning a two-game series with No. 20 Arizona. The Lobos also host 11th-ranked UC Irvine in a three-game tilt beginning Friday.
SAN DIEGO STATE DUO EARNS "NATIONAL ALL-STAR LINEUP" RECOGNITION
San Diego State sophomores Pat Colwell (OF) and Stephen Strasburg (RHP) earned national recognition in being named to the College Baseball Foundation and Diamond Sports "National All-Star Lineup" for the week of April 14. The College Baseball Foundation releases its "National All-Star Lineup" each week, giving accolades to the past week's top performers. The "National All-Star Lineup" is nominated by college coaches, staff and baseball media contacts. Colwell hit for the cycle in the Aztecs' 9-2 win over Utah on April 10, becoming the first SDSU player to ever hit for the cycle in program's 60-plus year history. Strasburg threw a one-hit, complete-game shutout in San Diego State's 1-0 win over Utah on April 9, setting a new Aztec and Mountain West Conference record with 23 strikeouts. The 23 K's ties for the third-most ever in a Division I game nationally and are the most in a game since the 1981 season. 2008 College Baseball Foundation/Diamond Sports "National All-Star Lineup" honorees: April 14 - Pat Colwell, So., OF, San Diego State; Stephen Strasburg, So., RHP, San Diego State. AIR FORCE'S JOSH MEENTS NAMED FINALIST FOR LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD
Air Force's Josh Meents is one of ten NCAA Division I collegiate baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field and was announced as a finalist for the 2008 Lowe's Senior CLASS (Celebrating, Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award in the baseball division on April 16. The finalists were chosen from a list of 30 candidates based on personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete. These four primary areas of criteria include the "Four C's" of classroom, character, community and competition.
The ten names will be placed on the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award baseball ballot for a nationwide vote which includes coaches, media and fans. The award winner will be announced and recognized at the 2008 NCAA® Men's College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
