MWC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week No. 12

Utah's Jesse Shriner and San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg earn weekly accolades.

May 12, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah senior catcher Jesse Shriner and San Diego State sophomore right-hander Stephen Strasburg have been named Mountain West Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week. This is the first weekly award of the season for Shriner and the seventh for Strasburg (fifth consecutive).

Shriner, a Littleton, Colo., native, went 12-for-23 (.522) from the plate with three home runs, 10 RBI and eight runs scored as Utah went 5-0 on the week, including a four-game sweep over Air Force. He also led Utes with a 1.043 slugging percentage on the week, while turning in a .577 on-base percentage. He started the week going 4-for-5 with a home run, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored in Utah's 22-3 win over Southern Utah. In the first game of the Air Force series, Shriner went 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored in a 5-2 Ute victory. On Saturday, he went a combined 4-for-8 from the plate, while tallying four RBI and two runs scored in Utah's doubleheader sweep of the Falcons. In the series finale, Shriner went 2-for-5 with two homers, three RBI and two runs scored in Utah's 12-4 victory.

Strasburg tossed his third consecutive complete-game victory in the Aztecs' 8-1 win at BYU last Thursday. He allowed just two hits and walked one, while striking out 15, his second highest total of the season. It was the sixth straight contest in which he finished in double figures in strikeouts. After giving up a base hit in the fourth, which led to an unearned run on a wild pitch, Strasburg struck out the next seven batters and faced only one batter over the minimum in his final 5.2 innings. With his 15 K's, Strasburg broke the MWC record for strikeouts in a season for conference games with 92 and also finished league play with a 0.63 earned run average to set a new league all-time mark.
