San Diego State Upsets Utah in 2008 MWC Men's Tennis Tournament

FORT WORTH, Texas - The sixth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs upset No. 3 seed Utah on Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to advance to the semifinals of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Championships. Utah was one of three teams this season to clinch a share of the MWC regular season-title. Utah jumped out to a 1-0 lead after capturing matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. The Ute duo of John Taylor and Othman Zeroulai-Ouariti led off play with an 8-2 victory over Danny Heidecker and Tim Schulz van Endert at the No. 2 slot. Utah's Timmy Allin and Wes Hancock followed with a 9-8(2) win over Achim Ceban and Andre Feliz at the bottom position to clinch the point. The Aztecs stormed back in singles play, winning four consecutive matches in straight sets to seal the contest. Heidecker began the scoring for San Diego State, defeating Jason Smits by a score of 6-1, 6-2. Juan Gomez followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hancock at the No. 4 position, while Ceban put the Aztecs up 3-0 in the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Zeroulai-Ouariti at the No. 3 slot. Feliz would clinch the match for San Diego State at the No. 6 position with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Allin.
