Mountain West Conference Names Women's Basketball Players of the Week TCU's Helena Sverrisdottir and Utah's Leilani Mitchell earn the awards
Feb. 11, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - TCU freshman Helena Sverrisdottir and Utah senior Leilani Mitchell have been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week. Sverrisdottir led the Horned Frogs to two wins last week, registering her first career double-double against BYU after pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds. The Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, native scored 14 points against the Cougars on 6-of-12 shooting from the field (.500) and 2-of-6 from three-point range (.333), while dishing out three assists and adding one steal. Against San Diego State, the guard recorded 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field (.625), 2-of-2 from beyond the arc (1.000) and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe (1.000). She also contributed four assists and had three steals. For the week, Sverrisdottir finished with a 14.5 point average on 55-percent shooting (11-of-20), while averaging 8.5 rebounds, and adding a total of seven assists to just one turnover in only 24 minutes of action in each game. Mitchell also led her team to a pair of victories last week as the Utes prevailed over UNLV and Air Force. Mitchell tallied back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 22.5 points on .485 shooting (16-of-23) and 10 assists. Against the Rebels, the Kennewick, Wash., product led her team with a season-high-tying and game-high 26 points and 10 assists. She scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half, marking her second double-double of the season and her first since conference play started. Mitchell went on to lead all scorers with 19 points and 10 assists against the Falcons, while committing zero turnovers in 39 minutes of action. For the week, the guard recorded 20 assists to only five turnovers (4.00 assist-to-turnover ratio), and led the Utes with five steals while averaging 4.5 rebounds. This marks Sverrisdottir's first career weekly honor and Mitchell's fifth for the season.
