Two MWC Schools to Host NCAA Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds San Diego State was selected for 2009, while New Mexico will host in 2010
Feb. 13, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee has selected San Diego State and New Mexico as additional first- and second-round sites for the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championships, respectively. The sites were added after the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee announced in the summer of 2007 that the championship would be expanding to 16 pre-determined first- and second-round sites beginning in 2009. The 2009 first and second rounds will mark the fourth time in school history that SDSU has played host to the NCAA women's basketball games. Previously, the tournament was held in Peterson Gym in 1984, 1994 and 1995. Since the facility opened in the fall of 1997, Cox Arena has served as the host site for three other NCAA championship events, including the 2001 and 2006 Men's Basketball first and second rounds and the 2001 Volleyball Final Four. The 2009 Championships at Cox Arena will take place either March 21 and 23, or March 22 and 24, 2009. New Mexico was selected to host the women's basketball championship for the fifth time in school history. University Arena "The Pit" last hosted in 2006, and saw fellow MWC member Utah make its run to the Elite Eight. New Mexico, who also hosted in 2003 and 2004, will serve as a first- and second-round site host for this year's 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament. The 2010 championships at The Pit will take place either March 20 and March 22, or March 21 and March 23, 2010.
