Women's Basketball Update - Feb. 17

Two MWC games went into extra periods as the second half of the conference season continues. Utah stands atop the MWC standings with a win over San Diego State, while TCU stayed in second place with an overtime win over New Mexico. Wyoming got back to its winning ways with a victory over Air Force, while UNLV prevailed in an overtime contest with BYU.

#19/#23 Utah 63, San Diego State 51
San Diego, Calif. Sat., Feb. 16, 2008
  • Utah has now won 16 straight games, tying the longest winning streak in the country (16 games - Chattanooga).
  • Utah's Kalee Whipple led the team with 15 points and 11 rebounds, marking her sixth double-double this season and 18th game in double-figures.
  • San Diego State's defense held Utah to its second lowest shooting percentage of the season, 38.5 percent.

UNLV 73, BYU 68 OT
Las Vegas, Nev. Sat., Feb. 16, 2008
  • UNLV defeated BYU at home in overtime for the second straight year after defeating the Cougars, 76-71, on Feb. 21, 2007.
  • The Rebels' win marked the first time they have defeated a team with a winning record this season since a 62-61 win over #16 George Washington on Nov. 30.
  • Four BYU players scored in double-figures in the loss, led by freshman Mindy Neilson's career-high 16 points.

#22/#21 Wyoming 60, Air Force 32

  • Wyoming earned its 20th victory this season marking the third straight year the Cowgirls have earned 20+ wins.
  • The Cowgirls' Hanna Zavecz recorded nine points and a season-high 14 rebounds to go along with her three steals and two blocks.
  • Air Force was held to a season-low 16 points in a half and a season-low 32 points. Wyoming has held three opponents this season to under 40 points (Northern Colorado - 68-37; Westminster College - 73-35).

TCU 59, New Mexico 51 OT
Fort Worth, Texas Sun., Feb. 17, 2008
  • The win over the Cowgirls marks the first season the Horned Frogs have won nine of its first 11 league games during three MWC seasons.
  • TCU freshman Helena Sverrisdottir scored a career-high 24 points in the win vs. New Mexico. She scored four points and grabbed two rebounds in the overtime period to give the Horned Frogs the win.
  • New Mexico's Brandi Kimble led the Lobos with a team-high 16 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Kimble and point-guard Amy Beggin played all 45 minutes of the game.
