BYU Selected to Win 2008 Mountain West Softball Regular-Season Championship

After winning the 2007 regular-season championship, the BYU Cougars have been selected to win the Mountain West Conference softball regular-season title in a vote by the league coaches released today. BYU received five first-place votes, while San Diego State also received one. BYU, who also won the regular-season crown in 2001 and 2005, collected 25 points to capture the top spot in the poll. San Diego State tallied 19 points to place second in the poll, followed by last year's regular-season runner-up UNLV (15 points). Colorado State and New Mexico tied for fourth place, with 13 points apiece, while Utah (5 points) was picked sixth. The Cougars, coming off a 43-20-0 overall record (16-4-0 MWC) and an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, return nine letterwinners, including MWC First-Team member Emi Snow (senior, outfield). BYU will also be led by all-conference performers Christie Zinanti (sophomore, pitcher) and Angeline Quiocho (sophomore, infielder) The Aztecs, (32-24-0, 8-12-0 MWC) who fielded a young team last year, will be led by three returning all-conference performers. Christina Ross (senior, pitcher), Lindsey Marquez (sophomore, infielder) and Brittany Knudsen (sophomore, outfielder) will all play for the Aztecs this season. UNLV (37-27 overall, 12-8-0 MWC) placed third in this season's poll after finishing second in the 2007 MWC regular-season. The Rebels return six starters this year, including all-conference performers Kendall Fearn (sophomore, infielder) and Jaci Hull (redshirt-sophomore, infielder). Colorado State (30-28-0 overall, 9-10-0 MWC) and New Mexico (20-25-0 overall, 9-11-0 MWC) tied for fourth in the poll as each team returns six starters from the 2007 squad. The Rams will be led by three 2007 all-conference selections, including MWC Freshman of the Year Ashley Munoz (outfielder). The Lobos welcome back 14 letterwinners, including all-MWC performer Analise Rubalcava (junior, infielder). Utah (25-26-1 overall, 5-14-0 MWC) enters the 2008 season with new head coach Amy Hogue at the helm of the program. The Utes return three-time all-MWC performer Diana Phillips (senior, outfielder) as well as conference standout Meghan Crouse (senior, outfielder). The 2008 season starts Thursday, Feb. 7, with BYU taking on Southern Utah in the BYU/UVSC Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. The 2008 conference season opens Thursday, April 3.
