MWC NOTES

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Mountain West softball teams are 44-12-1 through its second week of play. Last week Colorado State, San Diego State and UNLV recorded perfect 5-0 records at their home tournaments. BYU went 2-3, but defated #22 Missouri at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. New Mexico earned a 2-2 record at the Hampton Inn Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., while Utah went 2-3 in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

IN THE RANKINGS
UNLV is ranked for the first time this season as No. 21 in the USA Today/NFCA poll and No. 18 in the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball Poll. San Diego State is also ranked for the first time this season in the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball poll at No. 25. BYU and Colorado State are are also receiving votes in both polls.

BYU
The Cougars are on a seven game home run streak, with a total of 14 home runs in their 10 games... All three of the Cougars starting freshman are all batting over .300...BYU has eight batters hitting over .300 and as a team carries a .347 batting average and a .593 slugging percentage.

COLORADO STATE
CSU's 9-1 record marks best start for Ram softball since 1989 season...In the first 10 games, the Rams have hit 15 home runs and 19 doubles...They also have recorded 52 RBI and 99 hits...Seven players on the Ram roster hit better than .300 this past weekend...Two of those hitters, senior Lauren Cusick (.571) and freshman Caitlan Stem (.550), hit better than .500...As a team, the Rams are batting .322, while the CSU pitching staff is holding opponents to a .269 batting average...Senior Cayte Billman picked up two more wins this weekend to give her a 4- 0 overall record and junior Kim Klabough added one more win to her record to improve to 3- 0 to begin the season...Combined, Billman and Klabough have thrown 54 innings on the season surrendering only three home runs and striking out 42 batters. They have a combined ERA of 1.69.

NEW MEXICO
Freshman Gabriella Parra highlighted UNM's four games in the Crimson Classic, after hitting .364 in 11 at-bats...Senior Kelly Ninemire provide the pitching, throwing 12 innings and allowing a run on nine hits...Ninemire finished the weekend with a 1-1 record and a 0.58 ERA...New Mexico hosts the Lobo Invitational this weekend, with a field that includes No. 15 Washington, No. 22 Missouri, Texas Tech, and Wichita State...Saturday's matchup vs. No. 22 Missouri will be the first meeting between the Tigers and Lobos since head coach Ty Singleton left Mizzou following the 2006 season... Singleton guided Missouri to three NCAA Tournaments in his four seasons in Columbia.

SAN DIEGO STATE
San Diego State's 9-1 mark ties with the 2005 Aztecs for the best start in school history...SDSU went 5-0 over the weekend to claim its first Campbell/Cartier Classic title in the 18 years that it has been held...The Aztecs outscored their opponents, 22-3, as the pitching staff posted a 0.40 ERA with three shutouts over 35 innings...LHP Christina Ross went 4-0 with a 0.58 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 24 innings...Freshman SS Jen Wisneski batted a team-best .429 and recorded her first double and triple of her career...SDSU will face its toughest test this weekend when it plays in the Palm Springs Classic against nationally-ranked foes Arizona, Northwestern, Baylor, Georgia and Oklahoma.

UNLV
Jaci Hull and Alyssia De La Torre both hit above the .400 mark in the Rebels' five games in the Classic...For the second time in a week the Rebels got a walk-off home run to win a game...Last week, Stephanie Bean broke a 1-1 tie vs. Arizona State with her solo home run...On Sunday, Hull stepped up with UNLV trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh and hit a two-run blast to right for the game winner...The UNLV pitching staff went 5-0 on the weekend with Traci Odegard notching three wins and Stephanie Bregante registering two...Odegard held an ERA of 0.51 to Bregante's 0.72...After playing Monday's 11-1, five-inning, run-rule game vs. Seton Hall, the Rebels sit 9-1-1, the second-best start in program history...The 1995 squad began 10-1 en route to its Women's College World Series trip.

UTAH
Ashley Smuda has started all but one game this year at pitcher for Utah......Staci Hemingway had 10 RBI during the tournament...Five of those came in a career-high performance against Texas State...Former all-region player Diana Phillips started all five games after sitting out most of last weekend with an injury. She went 6-for-16 with two doubles and a .375 batting average.
