MWC NOTES
LAST WEEK'S RECAP
San Diego State stands in first place after the first week of conference play with a 2-0 record, after sweeping the doubleheader with UNLV. BYU posted a 3-1 record last week, defeating Colorado State twice and taking one from New Mexico. The Lobos and Utes are tied with 2-2 records, while the Rams are in fifth with a 1-3 conference mark.
IN THE RANKINGS
San Diego State continues to be ranked in the USA Today/NFCA poll at No. 21 and the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball poll at No. 18 this week. BYU is also receiving votes in both polls.
BYU
BYU played Utah Valley and shutout the Wolverines, while freshman Jessica Purcell knocked in six of the seven runs scored, with back-to-back home runs...BYU continues conference play after it hosts Southern Utah for a doubleheader at home, then travels to UNLV and San Diego State...Senior
Daniela Snow continues to lead the team from the batter's box, maintaining a .400 ERA, while Christina Gwyn-Trice leads the team from the circle with a 1.25 ERA.
COLORADO STATE
Colorado State holds the best team batting average in the MWC at .306...Five Rams (Julia Kloppe, Lauren Cusick, Caitlan Stem, Ashley Munoz, Allison Majam) are currently batting over .300...Those five players have accounted for 71.4 percent (120 of 168) of the team's RBI and are also responsible for 79.1 percent (34 of 43) of the team's home runs...CSU also holds the highest slugging percentage in the league at .510...Head Coach Mary Yori, who earlier this season coached in her 1,000th-career game (vs.
Utah State, March 8) and won her 200th game at CSU (vs. Texas - San Antonio, Feb. 15), coached in the 400th game of her career at CSU in Game 1 against BYU on Friday...Yori enters Wednesday's game vs. Northern Colorado with a career record of 671-347 (.659) and is 212-189 (.529) at CSU.
NEW MEXICO
Lindsey Elcess's 27 career home runs stands in second place all-time at UNM, tying her with Cassie Chavez, and putting her nine behind Kathy Moore's 36 career home runs....Gabriella Parra is top ten in four offensive categories in the MWC...She is sixth in batting average with .368, her .598
slugging percentage is good for eighth in conference, and her .440 on base percentage is ninth among MWC leaders...Parra's 27 RBIs ties her for fourth in conference...Kelly Ninemire has recorded 12 wins this season which is two shy of her 2007 total of 14.
SAN DIEGO STATE
The Aztecs are now 29-10 (.744) overall and 18-2 (.900) at SDSU Softball Stadium, on pace to break the school single-season records of 34-15 (.694) and 20-6 (.769), respectively...LHP Christina Ross had her consecutive scoreless inning streak end at 30 innings after surrendering a solo homer to UNLV's Ashli Holland in the fifth frame...With a strikeout against the Rebels' Rosa Ordaz in the sixth inning, Ross became just the third Aztec to reach the 500 strikeout plateau over her career...Ross is third on the list
and trails only Sandra Durazo's (1998-01) 543 and Celena Velasquez's (2003-06) 529.
UNLV
Three Rebels hit above .400 last week with Jaci Hull leading the way with her .500 average...Hull collected four hits in eight at-bats with one home run and two doubles...She added five runs and two RBI...On the year, Hull is the top hitter for UNLV with her .333 batting average...She leads the team in runs (31), hits (35), doubles (7), triples (2), home runs (10), RBI (27), total bases (76), slugging (.724), walks (29) and on-base (.496).
UTAH
Kara Foster hit .700 over the four games during the weekend, including two home runs and six RBI...Diana Phillips had six hits with a .353 batting average, including a double...Pitcher Ashley Smuda had 19 strikeouts with a 3.50 ERA and a 1-1 record...Phillips has 223 total hits and is just nine
hits from ranking in the top-five at Utah...She is also nearing the top-10 with 43 career stolen bases...Utah has turned 12 double plays this season, which ranks second in the conference...Foster added to her team-leading 12 home runs with two in the doubleheader against CSU...She is second in
the conference in the category.
