Wyoming Wins Opening Round of 2008 MWC Women's Tennis Tournament Cowgirls advance to Thursday's quarterfinals against TCU
April 23, 2008 FORT WORTH, Texas - Wyoming defeated Air Force by a score of 4-1 in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. With the win, the Cowgirls advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face top-seeded TCU on Thursday at 2 p.m. CT. The Air Force duo of Christine Abayan and Erlyn Rudico led off doubles play with an 8-2 victory over Rebecca Berger and Corina Lazar at the top position. Wyoming battled back, as Michelle Brown and Carly Van Hollen posted an 8-6 win over Lauren Wilson and Christen Monreal at No. 2, while the Cowgirl duo of Brittany DeFelice and Jamie Nelson edged Sammy Sarkis and Katrina Eromin by a score of 9-7 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point. Wyoming (11-12) quickly posted two singles victories to jump out to the 3-0 lead in the match. Sarah Summerfield led off singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Eromin at the No. 4 position, while senior Corina Lazar followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Abayan at the top spot. Wilson secured the only win for Air Force (6-21) on Wednesday, defeating Berger at the No. 2 slot by a score of 6-2, 7-5. With three remaining matches still in question, Wyoming's Brown clinched the contest for the Cowgirls with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Monreal at the No. 5 spot.
