New Mexico's Johnny Parkes and TCU's Macall Harkins Named Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week
March 27, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico's Johnny Parkes and TCU's Macall Harkins have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. This marks the first career honor for Parkes and the third for Harkins. Parkes won every match he finished over the weekend as he helped New Mexico to a 3-0 mark with victories over Old Dominion, South Alabama and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. At No. 2 singles, the junior from Southport, Merseyside, registered a 6-2, 6-4 upset win of No. 119 South Alabama's Marek Sramek and defeated TAMCC's Mikhail Pavlov (7-6, 6-3). Parkes teamed up with his brother Chris to post a perfect 3-0 mark at the No. 2 doubles position, collecting wins over ODU's Rodrigo Souza and Tobias Fanselow (8-3), USA's Marek Sramek and Robert Hodel (8-5) and TAMCC's James Langford and Laurent Montoisy (8-6). Parkes is 16-8 in singles action this season with a 12-8 record in doubles play.
Harkins, a native of Palos Verdes, Calif., remained hot in singles play over the weekend, winning her fifth contest in the last six matches in No. 19 TCU's 6-1 rout of Oklahoma. The junior posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Elena Antakova at the No. 2 singles position to put TCU up 3-0 in the match. In doubles play, the 12th-ranked duo of Harkins and Anna Sydorska posted an 8-4 win over Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Chelsea Orr at the top spot. Harkins and Sydorska have defeated four ranked opponents and are currently ranked No. 12 nationally in doubles play with an 11-2 record this season.
