Mountain West Conference Announces 2007-08 Women's Tennis All-Conference Awards UNLV's Elena Gantcheva named Player of the Year
April 23, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference announced its 2007-08 All-Conference team and individual awards for women's tennis today. The MWC awards are selected by the league's nine head coaches. UNLV senior Elena Gantcheva collected her third MWC Player of the Year honor after posting a 28-10 record this season, including a 7-1 mark in MWC matches at the No. 1 position. Currently listed at No. 34 nationally in singles, Gantcheva registered 10 victories over ranked opponents during the 2007-08 campaign. She becomes the first women's tennis player and fourth student-athlete overall in league history to win at least a share of three player of the year awards. Utah's Evgenia Kryuchkova earned MWC Freshman of the Year honors after netting a 23-12 overall record this season, including a 2-2 mark in MWC action at the No. 2 position. TCU head coach Jeff Hammond garnered MWC Coach of the Year accolades. Now in his second year with the Horned Frogs, Hammond guided 23rd-ranked TCU to an 18-4 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in MWC matches for the regular-season title. TCU had a league-high four singles players on the All-MWC team, followed by Utah with three. BYU and UNLV each had two honorees, while Colorado State, New Mexico and San Diego State had one apiece. TCU had two doubles teams net All-MWC accolades, while BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV and Utah each had one.
