ATHENS, Tenn. - In the preseason, they were tabbed as the Appalachian Athletic Conference's two top teams, and Sunday it showed as No. 10 Union College and host No. 7 Tennessee Wesleyan College split its conference doubleheader.
Union used a seven-run rally to win the opener 12-9, while Tennessee Wesleyan posted an eight-run outburst to capture a 9-2 decision in the second game.
With the split, Union is now 30-8 overall and 9-3 in league play, while Tennessee Wesleyan is 27-12 overall and 9-3 in the AAC.
A seven-run eighth inning helped propel Union to a 12-9 win in the opener.
Union trailed 5-0 before scoring a run in the seventh. Levi Hardin (Elizabethtown, Ky.) got the eighth-inning rally started with a two-run home run as Union grabbed an 8-5 advantage.
Tennessee Wesleyan fought back, scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth to pull within 8-7.
Union tacked on four more runs in the ninth and held on for the 12-9 victory.
Josh Ehringer (Somerset, Ky.) belted two home runs and drove in four runs for Union, while Justin Hart (Lake Mary, Fla.) lined another double.
Marcus White (Lubbock, Texas) picked the win to improve to 5-2 on the season, while Chaz Bargo (Artemus, Ky.) recorded his fourth save on the year.
In the finale, Tennessee Wesleyan exploded for eight runs in the fifth en route to the 9-2 victory.
Tennessee Wesleyan drew first blood, scoring in the first inning for a 1-0 advantage. Union battled back and eventually grabbed a 2-1 lead.
However, Tennessee Wesleyan pieced together an eight-run rally in the fifth to get the win and force the split.
Union returns to action Tuesday when it plays NCAA Division III Spalding (Ky.) University at 6 p.m.
Bulldog Notes
- Josh Ehringer's two home run game was the third time this season a Bulldog had multiple four-baggers in a contest. Prior to this season, no Bulldog had hit two or more home runs in a game since Erin Satterlee accomplished the feat on March 7, 2005, against Myers (Ohio) University.
- Union remains undefeated when scoring at least nine runs in a game, improving its mark to 23-0.
- Union is 22-3 in games decided by five or more runs.
- Union has now won at least 30 games in a season for the fifth year in a row and eighth time in nine years. Since reinstating the baseball program in 1975, Union has registered 11 30-win seasons, all since 1991.
