POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The first round is complete at the 17th Annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship with 13 of the seeded teams advancing to the second round. The 2008 event is being held at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).
Thursday's action began with another school's first ever tournament victory as #13 Northwood (Fla.) held off Bluefield (Va.), 88-86. Seahawk guard Brad Haugabrook hit the go-ahead jumper with one second left to propel Northwood into the second round. They will face #4 Walsh (Ohio) who recorded an impressive 91-57 victory over Judson (Ill.). The Cavaliers advance to the second round for the fourth straight year.
In the highest scoring game of the tournament, fifth seed Northwestern (Iowa) eliminated Minot State (N.D.), 97-90. It was the Red Raiders 26th tournament win, the most wins by any team. They will take on Oklahoma Wesleyan who recorded one of two minor upsets on the day with a 75-73 win over #12 William Pen (Iowa). The Eagles move on to the second round in their first ever national tournament appearance. They are the third team from the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (Ozarks, Bellevue) to advance to the round of 16.
Third seed Morningside (Iowa) knocked off Indiana Tech in the first game of the night session, 73-67. The Mustangs pulled away at the end of a very tight game to earn their second trip to the Sweet Sixteen. They will face Grace (Ind.) who came from nine points down in the second half to upset #14 Embry-Riddle (Fla.), 75-65. Lancer center Eric Gaff put on a clinic with 25 points (11/13 from the field), 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Grace joins Mid-Central College Conference rival in the second round.
In the final games of the first round, 11th seed Oregon Tech remained perfect (10-0) in the opening round of the tournament with a 77-74 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). The Hustlin Owls went on an 11-0 run in the second half to pull away and get the win. They will face sixth-seed Evangel (Mo.) who led from start to finish in their 73-48 win over Menlo (Calif.).
The 32-team, single elimination tournament continues with the second round on Friday, March 14, with eight games, starting with #9 Bethel vs Ottawa at 8:30 am. The quarterfinal round will be on Saturday, followed by the semifinals on Monday, March 17. The championship game will be played on Tuesday, March 18 at 8:30 pm.
