MACON, Ga. -- Berry's No. 16-ranked men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to the No. 9-ranked Savannah College of Art & Design on a neutral court Sun. The result leaves both teams at 8-6 for the season.
Berry's doubles play is normally its strength, but SCAD was able to win all-three doubles matches in convincing fashion. The Vikings lost 8-5, 8-4 and 8-5 at Nos. 1-3 respectively.
In singles play SCAD sealed the win with straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Jan Menzen downed Christian Jackle 6-4, 6-4. Then Willy Frei beat Andre Ferreira 7-5, 6-1 to clinch the match.
The Viking continued to battle and earned three-set victories at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. At No. 3 Marcelo Lebrao defeated Dumitru Chiriacov 7-3 in a third-set tiebreaker to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
At No. 5 singles Marcelo Peterlini took the third set 7-5 in his 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Fernando Horcasitas. Adam Clifton won at No. 6 singles by rallying to win the final two sets in his 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 match with Juan Pablo Valdez.
The Vikings have played tough competition all season and will continue in the next match. No. 5 Lindsey Wilson comes to the Richards Tennis Complex on Tuesday for a matches in both men's and women's tennis starting at 2:30 p.m. The LWC women's team is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA National Rankings.
