SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - No. 2 seed Davenport University picked up first round victory over seventh seed Southwestern College (Kan.), 76-66, in the opening game of the17th annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
Davenport (28-5) was led by senior Jeanette Woodberry who finished with a game-high 25 points, 17 coming in the first half as the Panthers opened up a 49-27 advantage at half.The Panthers hit seven three-point field goals in the first half, five coming from Woodberry, to keep the Southwestern Lady Builders at bay.
The Lady Builders (23-9) struggled from the field throughout the game, hitting just 19 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. (2-of-17). For the game Southwestern was led by Tylar Hartfield and Jenna Wilson with 17 points each. Hartfield also added nine rebounds. Kinsey Colclasure chipped in with a dozen points.
Supporting Woodberry's effort for the Panthers was Kristi Boehm with 13 points along with Kallie Benike and Brittany Lyman who finished with 11 each. Benike added a double-double, grabbing 10 boards. She also dished out six assists.
Davenport advances to the second-round game at 8:30 a.m. and will face the winner of Concordia (Neb.) and Union (Ky.).
