DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Lucy Elliott netted a goal in each half of play to lead No. 17 McKendree (Ill.) to a 2-0 win over No. 16 SUNY-Canton in the opening round of the 24th Annual NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship, Wednesday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
The Bearcats' first goal came after Sarah Ryan took the ball down the right side and got a low cross off to Elliott at point-blank range. Elliot's first-touch volley with the inside of her left foot beat SUNY-Canton keeper Brenna Sexton to put the Bearcats up 1-0 15 minutes into the match.
Elliott and Ryan combined for McKendree's second goal as Sexton stopped Ryan's initial shot on frame but Elliott was on hand to tuck in the rebound to seal the 2-0 win.
McKendree will play top-seed Lee (Tenn.) at 11 a.m. on Thursday, while SUNY-Canton's season comes to an end at 16-3.
