MACON, Ga. (April 6, 2008) -- The Berry women's tennis team downed No. 8-ranked Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) 5-3 on a neutral court match on Sun. The win improves the Lady Vikings record to 13-2 for the season. SCAD falls to 9-5 for the season.
Berry grabbed a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match. the No. 1 pair of Emma Cruz and Barbara Tomai downed Irina Pljusznyin and Stephanie Gula 8-2. The No. 2 doubles pair of Kirstin Ruffner and Anja Chan followed with an 8-6 win over Romina Mrochen and Kendal Ruffner. Hillary Collins and Erica Cardenas salvaged a point for SCAD with an 8-4 win at the No. 3 doubles position.
In singles play Berry and SCAD split a pair of matches. Plusznyin and Cardenas won at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles positions, while Berry's Chan won 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets over Courtney Collins and Kendal Ruffner accepted a forfeit from Hillary Collins, who couldn't continue down 5-4 in the first set.
That set the stage for Tomai to clinch the match for Berry in come-from-behind fashion. She dropped the first set 3-6, but rallied to win 6-3, 6-0 in the final two sets and claimed the match for Berry. With the match already decided the match between Kendal Ruffner and Mrochen was dropped at 3-3 in third set.
