COLUMBIA, Mo. - Day one of pool play saw Pool C with one of the three upsets of the day at the 28th Annual NAIA Volleyball National Championship.
Madonna (Mich.) knocked off No. 8 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in five games (27-30, 30-24, 30-27, 28-30, 15-11) before falling to No. 3 Concordia (Calif.) in three (33-31, 30-19, 30-26). Concordia also defeated Olivet Nazarene (30-21, 30-17, 30-24) before its win against Madonna and is 2-0 on the day.
Concordia's Traci Weamer led the Eagles with 22 including 12 against Madonna. Lindsey Campbell added 20 kills on the day while Vaness Perry and Jenna Friedrich split time at the setter position and had 42 and 39 assists respectively.
Lubovj Tihomirova led the Crusaders with 26 kills against Mount Vernon Nazarene and 13 against Concordia. Madonna also got contribution from Mary McGinnis who had 30 kills on the day and Jacqui Gatt who posted 55 digs.
Four MVNU players reached double figures in kills led by Shena Beheler with 24 kills. With her 21st kill, Beheler became the all time kills leaders at Mount Vernon Nazarene. Courtney Springer (15), Jackie Albrecht (14) and Audrey Hickinbotham (12) all reached double digits in kills.
