Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers women's soccer standout Lindsey Ozimek (Charlotte, N.C./Riverside) grabbed a team MVP and top academic award honor while men's distance runner Chase Eckard (Granite Falls, S.C./South Caldwell) took three MVP awards as Charlotte honored its team MVPs at the 2007-08 All-Sports Banquet, Sunday evening.
Ozimek, who retired as the 49ers all-time assist leader was named women's soccer Team MVP after leading the women's soccer team to Atlantic 10 Regular-Season and Tournament Championships and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She was also honored with a share of the 49ers Bonnie Cone Award, given to the female student-athlete with the highest GPA over the previous two semesters. Ozimek and teammate Nicole Labuda, volleyball's Lisa Thomas, softball's Gina Allen and track's Lamarra Currie all posted perfect 4.0 GPA's over the last two semesters. The men's academic award, The Hugh McEniry Award, was shared by tennis player Brad Clinard and track and field's Matt Dobler.
Eckard, who was named the A-10's 2007 Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning the 800 and 5000 meter races, was named 2007 Mens Outdoor Track MVP. He was also named 2007 Men's Cross Country MVP and 2008 Men's Indoor Track MVP. Meanwhile junior track star Aja Jackson (Charlotte, N.C./Waddell H.S.) grabbed a pair of MVP Awards. Jackson, the A-10 Most Outstanding Track Performer at the 2008 Indoor Track Championships, was named Women's Indoor Track MVP and Women's Cross-Country MVP.
In all, 32 awards were given out including the team MVP awards, team "Special Awards" and the department's academic awards. Several spring sports honored the 2006-07 recipient, since the 2007-08 season is not complete.
Senior Leemire Goldwire was named 2008 Men's Basketball MVP while sophomore Ian Andersen picked up his second straight Hayward Memorial Grubstake Award. In women's basketball, senior Sabrina Gregory was named team MVP while Erin Floyd received the team's Gold Nugget Award. All-America baseball hurler Adam Mills was recognized as the 2007 baseball MVP, all-America track and field standout Shareese Woods earned the 2007 Outdoor Track and Field MVP Award while senior Jonas Enander Hedin was named 2007 Golf MVP after leading the 49ers to a third-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
Among other highlights noted during the evening: The 49ers golf team was the consensus #1 team in the country in October, 2007 and remains in the top five heading into 2008 post-season play. The 2007-08 49ers women's basketball team was chosen by USA Basketball to be the first university to represent the US at the World University Games. The baseball team has reached the nation's top 25 in each of the last two years while the women's track and field program has won each and every Atlantic 10 Championship in which it has competed since joining the league three years ago. Men's and women's basketball both reached the post-season NIT Tournaments.
